SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments
related to North Korea between Aug. 6-12, 2009.

August
6 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Bruce Golding, prime
minister of Jamaica, to mark the 47th anniversary of Jamaica's independence.
6 Choe Thae-bok, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of
(North) Korea, meets with the friendship delegation of the Communist Party of
China led by Luo Shugang, permanent deputy head of the Publicity Department of
its Central Committee, at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.
6 A foreign ministry delegation led by Vice Minister Kim Yong-il leaves Pyongyang
for a an Asian regional tour.
6 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly
(SPA), sends a congratulatory message to Malam Bacai Sanha upon his election as
president of Guinea-Bissau.
7 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Laurent Gbagbo, president of Cote
d'Ivoire, to mark the 49th anniversary of the independence of his country.
8 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Singaporean President S. R. Nathan
to mark the country's 44th national day.
10 A delegation of the All-China Women's Federation led by Vice-President Zhen
Yan flies into Pyongyang.
10 Hyun Jung-eun, chairwoman of South Korea's Hyundai Group, visits Pyongyang to
seek the release of a detained South Korean employee.
10 A foreign ministry spokesman warns North Korea will "closely watch" how
regional countries react to South Korea's imminent launch of a space rocket,
claiming it has been unfairly punished for its own.
11 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Idriss Deby, president of the
Republic of Chad, on the 49th anniversary of its independence.
11 North Korea begins this year's "Arirang Games," a massive gymnastic display,
at Pyongyang's May Day Stadium.
12 The (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says that North Korean leader
Kim Jong-il inspected Kimjongsuk Naval University in Hamheung. Later in the day,
the KCNA says Kim Jong-il, together with army servicepersons, watched a drama
titled "A Sentry under a Neon Lamp" at the Hamhung Grand Theater.
12 Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of People's Artiste Kim Yun-bung, a
composer of the Mansudae Art Troupe, to express deep condolences over his death.
12 Alexander Matsegora, charge d'affaires ad interim of the Russian embassy in
Pyongyang, arranges a reception on the occasion of the anniversary of Korean
liberation from Japanese colonial rule on Aug. 15, 1945.
12 Kim Jong-il sends a message of greetings to Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz
on his 83rd birthday.
