Conclusion of Doha Round 'doable' by 2010: India
Bangkok, Aug 13 (PTI) India Thursday said the Doha Round
of world trade talks, stalled since July last year, could be
completed by 2010 as there were covergences now on a large
number of issues.
"It is doable," India Commerce and Industry Minister
Anand Sharma said when asked at a Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) conference here
whether the deadline of 2010 for the completion of Doha Round
could be met.
He said India was working with key interlocutors like the
US and Australia to make the talks successful.
The Doha Round of talks, which started in 2001, collapsed
in Geneva in July last year when India and the US locked horns
mainly on the issue of the level of protection to farmers in
developing countries once the global trade is liberalised.
Sharma said India stood for a rule-based multilateral
trading system and existing distortions must be corrected
because the mandate of Doha Round was the development of
emerging economies.
He said there were still certain issues of concern to the
developing countries and harmonisation needed to be achieved
on those areas of interest.
Sharma earlier called on Thai Prime Minister Abhisit
Vijaiva. PTI PC
