National campaign against cancer to be launched
in Yemen SANA'A, Aug 13 (Saba) –
Yemen is to launch next week a national campaign to definite cancer risks in the
country in
which President Ali Abdullah Saleh is expected to be honored for his efforts in
supporting caners patients.
A number of Arab and foreign figures will attend the
17-20 August
campaign activities that aim to provide support to cancer patients. The campaign
will include several awareness activities on cancer illness and ways of preventing
it in
a number of the country's provinces. Available official statistics show that the
only two national centers for cancer treatment in Yemen receive approximately 10,000
new
cancer patients annually. There are 360,000 registered cancer cases in Yemen and
20,000 deaths from breast cancer. One of eight Yemeni women may develop breast
cancer. The
campaign also aims to inform the public and decision-makers the magnitude of the
problem faced by Yemen, as result of the proliferation of cancer patients. MD/YA
