Mobile phones used by 26/11 terrorists reached Pak via China

Mumbai, Aug 14 (PTI) Five mobile phones used by
terrorists in the Mumbai attacks were made in China and
shipped to Pakistan last year, a US-based witness, the third
foreigner to suggest Pakistani links of the perpetrators, told
a special court here in India's western city Mumbai Friday.

The Enforcement Manager of Nokia in the US, whose name
was withheld apparently for security reasons, deposing through
video conference from the FBI office in the US, said the five
cell phones were ferried from China to Pakistan in June, 2008.

"I believe these phones were shipped from China to
Pakistan," the witness said on being examined by special
public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.

Five Nokia mobile phones were recovered by the Mumbai
police from the nine slain terrorists and FBI's help was
sought to ascertain from where they have been procured.

The Nokia representative is the third foreigner to have
suggested that the terror perpetrators had Pakistani links.

While an FBI forensic expert had told the court that the
perpetrators used GPS to navigate from Karachi to Mumbai by
sea, a representative of automobile giant Yamaha Motor Company
said during examination by Nikam yesterday that the terrorists
had used an outboard engine manufactured by them and delivered
in Pakistan to power the dinghy on which they landed on Mumbai
coast.

Asked how could she identify the phones, the witness
said it was through International Mobile Equipment
Identification (IMEI) number, a unique number alloted to each
mobile phone manufactured by Nokia.

The FBI had earlier informed Mumbai police that the
mobile phones were shipped to Nokia dealers "United Mobile"
and "Twelve Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd" in Pakistan.

When the Nokia employee was shown a letter written by
her to FBI in this regard on February 12 this year, she said
it was issued under her signature.

To a query of Judge M L Tahilyani, the witness said the
database can be accessed by any Nokia office in the world if
they have the password given by the company.

The witness told defence lawyer Abbas Kazmi that she was
authorised to depose on behalf of Nokia but she was not
carrying any authorisation letter.

Mohd.Ajmal Kasab, the lone 22-year-old surviving
terrorist in the 26/11 strikes, heard the deposition and
smiled at the mention of Pakistan by the witness. Kasab last
month admitted to his guilt but quickly retracted his
confession. PTI SVS
