Samsung Electronics`s sales up 12 pct in H1
SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., a South Korean electronics
giant, said Sunday that its sales for the first half of 2009 climbed more than 12
percent from a year ago thanks to a strong increase in overseas demand.
Samsung's sales reached 39.6 trillion won (US$32 billion) during the January-June
period, up 12.3 percent from 35.2 trillion won for the same period last year, the
company said in a regulatory filing.
The company attributed the increase in sales to a 16.3 percent hike in exports of
its digital consumer and home appliance goods.
Samsung's exports of digital media products such as computers, mobile phones and
MP3 music players soared 46.1 percent to 12.8 trillion won during the period,
while its air conditioners, washing machines and other home appliance goods also
enjoyed a 46.9 percent hike in offshore shipments.
Overseas shipments of such parts as semiconductors and liquid crystal displays,
however, slipped 4.9 percent from last year to 15.5 trillion won.
However, the company reported that its domestic sales slumped 3 percent from last
year to 7.5 trillion won due to weakened demand.
