Washington's N.K. sanctions team due in Seoul next week

SEOUL, Aug. 16 (Yonhap) -- A U.S. government delegation will visit South Korea
next week to discuss measures to enforce punitive sanctions the United Nations
has imposed on North Korea for its rule-violating missile and nuclear tests,
Seoul officials said Sunday.
The delegation, led by Philip Goldberg, the U.S. Department of State's
coordinator for the implementation of U.N. sanctions on North Korea, is due in
Seoul on Aug. 23 for a two-day trip as part of its four-nation Asian tour which
will also take it to Tokyo, Singapore and Bangkok, said the foreign ministry
officials.
The U.S. team will be comprised of officials from the Treasury Department, the
National Security Council and the Department of Defense, they said.
The U.N. Security Council (UNSC) adopted sanctions resolutions after North Korea
conducted long-range missile tests in April and its second nuclear test in May.
The resolutions call for financial sanctions and an overall arms embargo and
allow member countries to inspect North Korean ships suspected of carrying
weapons of mass destruction.
"We believe that Goldberg won't likely demand something particularly new, but
would rather review the current state of previously-placed sanctions," a ministry
official said.
Meanwhile, Song Young-wan, a former director general of the foreign ministry's
international organization bureau, was recently named a member on the UNSC's
expert's panel charged with reviewing the progress of sanctions implementation
starting next month, ministry officials said.
