Hyderabad, Aug 16 (PTI) India's mixed doubles pair of
Jwala Gutta and V Diju pulled out of the Macau Open after the
latter picked up a back injury during their lost quarterfinal
match in the World Badminton Championship at the Gachibowli
stadium here.

The world number eight pair was seeded second in the
tournament which starts on Wednesday at Macau city but the
decided to skip the tournament and would next play in the
Chinese Taipei Gold Grand Prix starting August 25.

"I felt a little stiffness in my back during our last
match, so I decided to skip the Macau Open and take some rest
so that we can play in the Chinese Taipei. It is not serious,
its just an old pain. I'm okay and we would leave for Chinese
Taipei next Sunday," Diju told PTI.

India's new women's doubles pair of Jwala and Ashwini
Poppanna will also have to miss the tournament.

"As me and Diju are not participating in the Macau Open,
it won't be feasible for me and Ashwini to go for only one
event. It is unfortunate but we will have to miss that. I have
spoken to Ashwini and she understands," Jwala said here in
the capital of the south-eastern state of Andhra Pradesh.

Jwala and Diju are hoping to crack the top five bracket
by the year end.

"I hope we break the top five by the year end. It would
be difficult as all them in the top 10 are more or less the
same and anybody can beat anybody but we hope to do well and
make it happen," said Jwala, a seven-time national doubles
champion.

Jwala said she was satisfied with her performance in the
world championship despite the quarterfinal loss.

"My defense and back hand has improved. I could feel it
during the matches. I feel we played well. I don't know what
happened in the quarterfinals," Jwala said.

"I am happy that Diju is also becoming more and more
confident now and he tells me what to do and how to go about
things. I hope we can perform better," she added.

Jwala-Diju became the first Indian mixed doubles pair
to reach the quarterfinals of the world championship before
going down to second seed Indonesian pair of Nova Widianto and
Liliyana Natsir 21-16 21-14 in the final eight.

Meanwhile, the Indian team comprising Arvind Bhat, RMV
Gurusaidatt, Ajay Jayaram, Anup Sridhar, Chetan Anand, P
Kashyap , Sayali Gokhale, Aditi Mutatkar, Rupesh K T Kumar
and Sanave Thomas left for Macau city Saturday. PTI
