Samsung Securities starts operations at Hong Kong unit

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korean brokerage giant Samsung Securities Co.
said Tuesday its Hong Kong unit kicked off investment banking operations in a bid
to strengthen its presence in the Asian region.

The Hong Kong-based Samsung Securities Asia Ltd. deals with initial public
offerings and corporate financing from mergers and acquisitions, expanding from
its previous focus on brokerage of local shares, Samsung Securities said.
The company said it plans to strengthen the Hong Kong unit into one of the
leading investment banks in Hong Kong in three years and is currently seeking a
Chinese partner to help it further tap into the Chinese market.
Incorporated in 2001, the Hong Kong unit has raised US$100 million in capital to
finance its business expansion.
"The entrance to the Hong Kong investment banking sector will become the first
step forward in Samsung Securities' global expansion," the firm quoted CEO Park
Chun-hyoen as saying.
