UN chief to pay tribute to late president Kim Dae-jung
SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans to visit a
Seoul hospital where the body of former president Kim Dae-jung is placed, Ban's
aides said Tuesday.
Kim died at Severance Hospital in western Seoul earlier in the day after weeks of
struggle against pneumonia and related complications. A temporary mourning altar
has been set up at the hospital.
"Secretary-General Ban plans to pay his condolences there before his departure,"
a U.N. official accompanying Ban on his trip here, adding the time of the visit
has yet to be decided.
The U.N. chief, a former South Korean foreign minister, is scheduled to leave
South Korea on Tuesday evening after a 10-day stay.
Ban met with President Lee Myung-bak earlier Tuesday and discussed ways to
resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis and deal with other global challenges
including climate change.
