Victorian police to induct people from different communities

Melbourne, Aug 18 (PTI) Against the backdrop of racial
attacks on foreign students, Victorian Police is all set to
induct people from more than 200 different communities living
here for their better involvement in ensuring law and order.

"This is an attempt to make police multi-cultural. We
are keen to make police representative of more communities,"
Commander of Victorian Police, Trevor Carter said.

Interacting with a group of journalists from India,
Carter said Victorian Police has a multi-cultural advisory
unit which engages people from different communities in
maintenance of law and order in the city.

There are about 100 cultural liasoning officers,
including five Hindi-speaking officers, in Victorian Police.
Their work is to go to people of different communities and
sensitise them on safety precautions and cooperation to
police. The unit, raised after the 9/11 terrorist attack, aims
at involving people from different communities in policing.

"The 14,000-strong Victorian Police now needs more
community engagement against the backdrop of attacks on
Indians and people of other nationalities," he said.

Dinesh Nettur, a community liasoning officer with
Victorian Police, said liasoning officers go to all five
regions under Victorian Police to create awareness on law and
order and deliver presentations on safety measures.

This move by the police to induct people from other
communities assumes significance as police have found out that
the people behind the racial attacks are from different
cultural backgrounds.

Police have also arrested 87 people allegedly involved
in robbery and assault cases who turned out to be from
different communities.

Nettur, who has been working with Victorian Police
since 1997, said the liasoning officers would help the assault
victims in a big way.

A number of foreign students, including around 25 from
India, had been attacked in Australia in recent months.

A global education destination, Australia is home to
around 95,000 students from India itself. PTI
