Parliament adopts report on prosecutor-general nominee

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- Parliament's judiciary committee adopted a report Tuesday on the confirmation hearing of Kim Joon-kyu, President Lee Myung-bak's new choice for prosecutor general.

The report contained the majority opinion that "Kim has adequate capabilities" as
chief of the prosecution while acknowledging the opposition party's opinion of
his "inappropriateness" for the post as an "accompanying" view.
Chang Yoon-seok of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) said Kim is an
appropriate candidate for prosecutor general in view of his expertise and
qualities, adding that suspicions raised during the hearing cannot be regarded as
"reasons for disqualification."
The opposition Democratic Party (DP) did not refuse to adopt the report,
although it maintained the position that the nominee is inappropriate, said Woo
Yoon-keun of the DP.
President Lee tapped Kim, former head of a district prosecutor's office, as the
new prosecutor general July 28. Kim is Lee's second nominee to the post in just
over a month.
Kim's nomination came two weeks after the former nominee, Chun Sung-gwan,
withdrew following a parliamentary confirmation hearing that exposed his family's
extravagant lifestyle and his "inappropriate" loan from a local businessman to
purchase an expensive apartment.
