Seoul stocks start higher on U.S. rallies

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks got off to a strong start Wednesday, mirroring overnight Wall Street rallies, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 8.34 points, or
0.54 percent, to 1,558.58 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Upbeat earnings reports by retail firms buoyed U.S. shares on Tuesday with the
Dow Jones industrial average advancing 0.90 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,244 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m.,
up 2.3 won from Tuesday's close.
