Hyundai Motor becomes top-selling carmaker in Turkey

SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest automaker,
unseated Renault SA of France as the top-selling carmaker in Turkey in the first
half of this year, company officials said Thursday.

Hyundai sold 29,855 units in the European country during the January-June period,
compared with 29,602 units sold by Renault, according to Hyundai officials.
The increased sales gave Hyundai 15.7 percent of the Turkish market for the
period, while Renault's share remained stagnant at 15.6 percent.
While the figures were based on six-month tallies, Hyundai officials said the
switch is remarkable.
"It's the first time that Hyundai Motor claimed the No. 1 position in a European
country," said a company official.
The achievement was mainly driven by sales of Hyundai's compact car Accent, which
surged 78 percent to 19,336 units in the first seven months of this year.
Hyundai started operations at its factory in Turkey in 1997.
