TOMMY'S CANDIDACY POSSIBLE IF CERTAIN QUALIFICATIONS MET: GOLKAR EXECUTIVE

Jakarta, Aug 20 (ANTARA) - A Golkar Party functionary said here on Thursday, Tommy Soeharto may have a chance to become a candidate for the party leadership if he can meet certain qualifications.

"The Golkar Party is an open party. Every cadre may run so long as he/she can meet the qualifications set in the party's internal rules," Musfihin Dahlan, a member of the party's central executive board, said.

He said the number of aspirants for the party's top post would increase if Tommy Soeharto, who is the son of former president Soeharto, would really participate in the election, which is scheduled to take place at a party conference in Pekanbaru on October 4-7.

Several party cadres who had so far expressed their intention to run for the party's chairmanship include the chairman of the party's advisory board, Surya Paloh, and member Aburizal Bakrie.

"The more candidates there are, the better, because then the delegates to the conference can choose more freely," he said.

Musfihin who is also a member of the party faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) said the big number of aspirants only showed that the party did not have a shortage of cadres.

"It will be the conference that will determine who is the best among them," he said while reminding about the system and mechanism that had already been in place for it.

He said some of the requirements for candidates to be able to be chosen were that he/she must have a performance record, proven dedication and loyalty to the party and an unblemished reputation as stipulated in the party's internal rules. There are also other organizational conditions such as having been a party functionary at central level or a level just below it, he said.

He said candidates also had to be supported by regional chapters to be able to win the race.

In view of all these pre-qualifications, he said, it remained to be seen if Tommy could meet them . "The mechanism is not complicated. Any cadre who meets the requirements is eligible," he said.

He said as a big party Golkar had to be consistent with its rules. "It isn't that Golkar's recruitment system is the best. There is a standard mechanism that has to be used. All cadres are welcome not because he or she is the son or daughter of a rich family or a national figure but because he or she meets the requireemnts," he said.

On preparations of other aspirants with regard to Tommy's planned participation, Muslihin said that they would certainly strengthen their strategy. Mentioning an example, he said, Aburizal Bakrie had offered a perpetual fund of Rp1 trillion for the party.

"Ical (Aburizal) also has an edge in terms of qualifications such as proven capability in business as well as state administration. He also has enormous capability in terms of logistics," he said.

He said he could also embrace Akbar Tanjung (former Golkar chairman) who still had many supporters in the regions. "There is strong affinity in the regions to Akbar and so if he supports Ical they will also support him," he said.

Yuddy Chrisnandi, another aspirant, meanwhile had met with Tommy but both men did not disclose to the media what they discussed.

Golkar, once the strongest political party in the country, was defeated in the legislative elections last April by the much younger Democratic Party (PD).

Its presidential candidate, namely Jusuf Kalla, the party's current chairperson, was also defeated in the presidential race on July 8 by incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the Democtatic Party. ***
