BELM PLANS TO MANUFACTURE HEAVY EQUIPMENT IN INDONESIA

Jakarta, 24/8 (ANTARA) - PT BELM Indonesia, an Indian manufacturer of heavy equipment, planned to engage in production in Indonesia after its sales reached 300 million US dollars.

"We will be assembling in Indonesia after our sales had reached 300 million US dollars," Chairman and Managing Director of BELM Limited V RS Natarajan said in Jakarta Monday.

The Indian company also projected its sales to reach 300 million US dollars in the next three years.

In India, Natarajan said, the company 70 percent of whose shares is controlled by its government planned to manufacture up to 1,000 units of heavy equipment per year.

He said the company's production of heavy equipment is meant for the mining, construction, transportation sectors in Indonesia , and expected to constantly increase every year.

He also estimated that the consumption of heavy equipment in Indonesia may reach 400 million to 500 million US dollars per year.

"The figure includes both sales and after sales service," he added.

He believed his company could secure 15 percent of the heavy equipment market in Indonesia, which is now still under control of Komatsu of Japan, and Caterpillar of the United States.

Natarajan said he has a strong hope that the company would engage in production work in Indonesia, considering that the company which has already supplied heavy equipment to PT Bumi Resources Tbk and Bakrie Group, has plans to expand its market to Australia.

"Strategic partnership between Indonesia and India since 2005, has become the basis of the company's expansion to Indonesia. Economic cooperation between the two sides has become stronger because this month agreement has has been reached on free trade between ASEAN and India," he said.
