VOLLEYBALL - RI WOMEN'S TEAM TO COMPETE IN ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP
Jakarta, Aug 26 (ANTARA) - An Indonesian women's volleyball team, despite its lack of experience in international tournaments, is to compete in the Asian Championship in Vietnam next September 5-9, 2009, an official said.
"The team will be placed in one group with India, South Korea and Thailand. Since they are newcomers in the international scene, we will not commit them to a certain target. Instead, we expect them to use the oportunity to improve their skills," an official from Indonesia Volleyball Association (PP PBVSI), Heyzer Harsono, stated here on Wednesday.
He said almost 90 percent of volleyball players in the Seeded Athletes Program (PAL) were junior players whose experience was limited to an ASEAN Junior Championship in Jember, East Java, in 2008.
Heyzer said the new athletes still had a chance to perform better in the future. The most important thing was that players can get more experience during every competition they participate in.
If the strategy worked, Heyzer said, the women's team was expected to increase their skill before being sent to Sea Games XXV in Laos in December 2009.
"We hope after the tournament in Vietnam, our women's volleyball team can place themselves in the final spot of the SEA Games in Laos. If this goal is achieved, the Indonesian team will be able to improve on its fine performance two years ago in Thailand where they won a bronze medal," he said.
Gradual training for athletes and the courage to send junior athletes to international events, he said, are good strategies. Heyzer expects the women's volleyball team to emulate the men's team's achievement who always made it to SEA Games finals.
"In SEA Games 2007 in Thailand, the men's volleyball team won a gold medal. We hope better preparations in our national team today can bring the same results," he said. ***5***
