BRIDGE - RI TARGETS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN SAO PAULO
Jakarta, Aug 26 (ANTARA) - The All-Indonesia Bridge Club Union (Gabsi) is to send a senior players team to the 31st World Group Bridge Championship in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with the target of grabbing the first prize, a spokesman said.
The Sao Paulo tournament will run from August 29 - September 12, 2009.
"We are to send a senior players team and their target is nothing less than to win the championship," Gabsi chairman Wimpy S Tjetjep said here Wednesday.
The Indonesian contingent would also include a ladies' team but their target was reaching the quarter-finals, he said.
The World Bridge championship is the most prestigious competition in the sport, comparable to the World Cup in football, he said.
In the 22-nation Sao Paolo competition, Indonesia would take part in two of the three main main events, namely in those for women teams and for senior player teams, he said.
To participate in Sao Paolo, Indonesia as a member of Zone VI Asia Pacific, had had to compete in the Zone VI elimination rounds which were held in conjunction with the 46th Asia Pacific bridge Federation Championship in Macau, China, last June 18-28, 2009.
Indonesia won in senior team and qualified in Zone VI after beating Japan in the deciding game.
Meanwhile, in the Open Team event Indonesia tragically failed to qualify as it lost to Taiwan in the deciding game.
