S. Korea to send four police officers to East Timor
SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to dispatch four police officers to East Timor to help with United Nations' peacekeeping operations there, a government source said Thursday.
"The government has decided to dispatch four police officers through
consultations with the National Police Agency at the request of the U.N.," the
source said, adding it is part of Seoul's efforts to expand its contributions to
the international community. The duration of their mission will be decided in
accordance with the security situation in East Timor, the source said.
It would be the first time in three years for South Korea to send a police team
to the country, which has been plagued by public disorder since its 1999
independence from Indonesia.
South Korea also operated a military unit of about 400 soldiers in East Timor
from 1999-2003.
