NUMBER OF DIARRHEA PATIENTS IN KOTAWARINGIN TIMUR UP 250 PERCENT
Sampit, Indonesia, Aug. 27 (ANTARA) - The number of diarrhea patients admitted to Dr Murjadi Sampit General Hospital, Kotawaringin Timur District, Central Kalimantan, has increased 250 percent over the past three months.
"During the last three months, diarrhea sufferers are the largest number of patients being hospitalized in dr Murjadi Sampit hospital," Ratna Yuniarti, director of dr Murjani Sampit Public Hospital, said here on Thursday.
The diarrhea cases have increased significantly because the public have not yet followed a healthy life style, she said.
More than 50 percent of the diarrhea sufferers were children at the age of between two and 12 years old, she said.
In July alone, Kotawaringin Timur District recorded a total of 224 cases of diarrhea, up three folds from 88 cases a month earlier, according to her.
"However, despite the significant increase in the number of diarrhea patients, there is no fatality so far, as all patients have been saved," he said.
But the diarrhea cases in August alone (until Aug. 25), decreased from 224 cases to 112 cases.
She called on the public to maintain cleanliness and apply a healthy life style in their routine daily activities.
Meanwhile, Nineteen infants were infected with diarrhea virus in Merangin District, Jambi province, Sumatra, from August 1 to 14, 2009.
Diarrhea not only affected children but also adults in the current seasonal transition, Abdul Rahman, director of dr. Mahmulsyah Munthe Merangin public hospital, said in Jambi recently.***
