TEN DIE OF HIV/AIDS IN PANDEGLANG
Pandeglang, Banten, Aug. 28 (ANTARA) - Ten residents of Pandeglang District, Banten Province, have died of HIV/AIDS over the past two years.
"We have asked the people to be on alert to the danger of HIV/AIDS," Dr Asmani Raneyanti, head of the Pandeglang health service's contagious disease and environmental health office, said here on Wednesday.
The HIV/AIDS disease is infected due to unprotected sex, blood transfusion, HIV/AIDS-virus stained-breast milk, and unsafe injection practices, especially re-use of unsterilized needles and syringes.
"If somebody is infected with this disease, it's almost certain that he will survive for only five to 10 years," he said.
In 2008, six people including one elementary school student and a university student, died of HIV/AIDS virus. The primary school student had contracted the fatal disease from his mother who worked in Jakarta, Raneyanti said.
This year, four people died of HIV/AIDS virus, she said.
From 2003 to 2009, Banten has a total of 1,455 cases of HIV/AIDS and 54 of the patients have died.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto recently ordered provincial governors, district heads and city mayors in the country to immediately formulate bylaws to prevent and overcome HIV/AIDS.
He said HIV/AIDS had spread in 214 districts in 32 of 33 provinces in the country.
The minister as deputy head of the National HIV/AIDS Control Commission (KPAN) met with provincial governors, city mayors and district heads in Bali early this month.
Mardiyanto expressed deep concern over the spread of HIV/AIDS cases affecting no less than 17,699 people in the country.
