POLICE INFORM SAUDI GOVT ABOUT ABDULLAH'S ARREST

Jakarta, Aug. 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesian police have informed the Saudi Arabian government about the arrest of Saudi national Ali Muhammad Abdullah on suspicion of involvement in terrorism funding, the foreign ministry said here Friday.

A consular process on the Saudi national had been carried out, according to Teuku Faizasyah, the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry's official spokesman.

Abdullah was arrested recently at Nagrek, Kuningan, West Java Province, for suspected involvement in funding terrorism in Indonesia.

In response to the information, the Saudi government had requested a further explanation, Faizasyah said.

"We are now waiting for a process to confirm Abdullah's identity. The Saudi government's involvement is to verify the data on Abdullah for clarification," he said.

The Saudi government needed some time to contact the related agencies in the Middle Eastern country for clarification of Abdullah's identity and nationality, he said.

The Indonesian police had detained Ali Abdullah as he was suspected of having provided funds for terrorist activity.

In line with the Law No. 15/2003 on terrorism eradication, police have the authority to arrest and interrogate someone for seven days.

If, they found indications that he or she was involved in any terrorism action, the arrest could be extended, and if not, they should release him/her.

Ali Abdullah was suspected of providing funds for the bombings of the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta last July 17, 2009, which killed nine people and injured 53 others.

In the latest suicide bombing cases, the police had also detained Indra and Aris, residents of Beji village, Kedu sub district, Temanggung, Central Java.

Both of them were suspected of having provided a hide-out for Ibrahim who was killed in a police raid at Beji village recently.

Two other suspects, Air Setiawan and Eko Joko were killed in another police raid at Jatiasih, Bekasi, West Java, last August 8, 2009, while Nana Ichwan Maulana and Dani Dwi Permana were the two suicide bombers at the two five-star hotels.

Other suspects being sought by police are Syaifudin Zuhri bin Djaelani Irsyad alias Udin alias Soleh, Ario Sudarso alias Suparjo Dwi Anggoro alias Aji alias Dayat alias Mistamusamudin, Bagus Budi Pranoto alias Urwah, and Mohamad Syahrir.

Police are also still hunting Malaysian-born fugitive terror mastermind Noordin M Top for his role in a series of bombings in Indonesia. ***4***
