BEI INDEX OPENS HIGHER AS PLAYERS HUNT SMALL-CAP SHARES

Jakarta, Aug. 28 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) here on Friday morning opened higher as investors hunted for small-cap shares.

The BEI index went up 6.221 points or 0.25 percent to 2,361.920 and the LQ-45 surged 0.750 points or 0.16 percent to 460.073 points.

The main factor which boosted the Indonesian stocks, was Wall Street bourse gains which also positively affected the regional bourses, Alfiansyah, a stock broker of PT Sinarmas Securities, said.

He was optimistic that the Indonesian Stock Exchange would rally further.

Investors started to pay attention to the world bourse movement which had tended to strengthen over the past few days, although they had ignored the positive factor before, according to Alfiansyah.

Small-cap shares gained at the average of Rp50 per share, except Astra International shares which significantly climbed Rp400 per share, he said.

He believed the BEI index still had a big chance to advance further.

The rupiah strengthened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Friday morning on profit taking moves.

The Indonesian currency traded Rp10,120-Rp10,135 per US dollar, up 20 points from Rp10,140-Rp10,155 per US dollar at the market's close a day earlier.

The local unit surged as local investors released their greenback to take profit after the foreign currency had strengthened over the past few days, Edwin Sinaga, a domestic money market observer, said.
