RUPIAH WEAKENING AS BUSINESSES NEED DOLLARS TO PAY DEBTS
Jakarta, Aug 29 (ANTARA) - Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Darmin Nasution said the rupiah was weakening reaching over Rp10,000 per US dollar because of high demand of private businesses for the greenback to pay their external debts.
"Actually, the dollar should not strengthen but debt payments are in big volumes. The external debts of private companies are falling due," the central bank's senior deputy governor said here over the weekend.
After strengthening at Rp9,980 per US dollar, the rupiah again fell to over Rp10,000 per US dollar.
The greenback in Jakarta's interbank spot money market on Tuesday evening reached Rp10,020 - Rp10,035, or weakening 35 points because market players were still active in purchasing the US currency.
Even though the rupiah strengthened by 20 points at Jakarta's interbank sport market on Friday, the rupiah value remained over the Rp10,000 per US dollar level.***
