SUGAR PRICE HIKES IN C JAVA `STILL REASONABLE`: GOVERNOR

Semarang, Indonesia, Aug 31 (ANTARA) - The Central Java provincial administration will not as yet intervene in the sugar market as the price increases that have happened so far are "still reasonable," an official said.

"The sugar price hikes so far are still reasonable and therefore it is not yet necessary to conduct market operations," Governor Bibit Waluyo said at a plenary session of the Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) here on Monday.

He said the government would carry out market operations if the sugar price during the fasting month increased beyond reasonable limits.

As long as the sugar price was still affordable by consumers and traders had a little profit from the price rise, no market operation was necessary, he said.

"There is no problem with the sugar price hike because it is still affordable while it is time for traders to have a little profit," the governor said.

He added that the government did not need to conduct market operations because there was a surplus in sugar supply.

"Sugar supply at present in Central Java is 60,000 tons while demand per month is only 30,000 tons," Waluyo said.

He said the prices of three commodities namely sugar, chili, and garlic always had the tendency to rise during the fasting month.

"The sugar price in the fasting month usually rises significantly while the prices of chili and garlic are not very high," the governor said.***
