S. Korea`s Chungju to host 2013 World Rowing Championships
CHUNGJU, South Korea, Aug. 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's central city of Chungju
has been selected as the venue for the World Rowing Championships in 2013, city
officials said Monday.
The International Rowing Federation (FISA) selected Chungju, 147km south of
Seoul, as the host for the championships in a plenary meeting in Poznan, Poland
earlier in the day.
The championships will be held for eight days from Aug. 25, 2013 at the rowing
arena in Tangeum Lake.
A total of 2,200 rowers from 80 countries are expected to compete in 27
divisions, including sculls, cox pairs, coxless pairs, cox fours and coxless
fours.
It is the first time a South Korean city has been picked as the venue of the
world rowing championships and the second in Asia, following Japan's Kaizu, which
hosted the event in 2005.
Chungju was recommended as the sole candidate for the 2013 championships by the
FISA executive committee held in Switzerland last month, beating Germany's
Brandenburg and Amsterdam of the Netherlands.
North Chungcheong Province Governor Chung Woo-taik said the province will host
the event successfully in cooperation with the South Korean government and the
city of Chungju. Chung, co-chairman of the invitation committee, also said in
Poznan following the selection of Chungju that the championships will contribute
greatly to the expansion of rowing enthusiasts in Asia.
