DEATH TOLL OF POWERFUL QUAKE IN WEST JAVA AT LEAST 44 PEOPLE
Bandung, W Java, Aug 2 (ANTARA) - The death toll from the powerful quake hitting West Java at around 3 p.m on Wednesday has reached at least 44 people and hundreds of homes and buildings destroyed, official said.
"The provisional report from the West Java disaster coordinating official said the death toll has reached 44 people and mostly found in Cianjur district," West Java governor, Heryawan said here on Wednesday night.
According to him, the dead victims were among other things found in the districts of Cianjur 10 persons, Bandung 8 persons, Tasikmalaya 8 persons, Garut three persons, Bogor two persons, Sukabumi one person, Ciamis one person and Bandung Barat one person.
In addition the tremor also destroyed 795 houses, four mosques, one Islamic Boarding school (Pesantren) and five school buildings.
Most of the victims died after their houses collapsed on them or buried in landslides that occurred after the quake in Pamoyangan and Cikangkareng villages.
As many as 200 quake victims from Ciwidey and Pangalengan in Bandung district, West Java, have been taken to the Al Ihsan hospital in the district.
"According to data of the security section, up to 200 victims have been referred to the hospital until 7 p.m, including two who had died," a security officer at the hospital, Edi Harapa, told ANTARA on Wednesday.
He said most of the victims suffered broken bones or head injuries.
The hospital had to set up makeshift tents on its compound to accommodate the quake victims who outnumbered the hospital's capacity.
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale shook southwest Tasikmalaya, West Java, on Wednesday at 02.55 pm West Indonesia Time (WIB), causing people as far as Jakarta to panic.
The quake's epicenter was located at 8.24 degrees southern latitude, and 107.32 degrees eastern longitude, according to information from the meteorology, climatology, and geophysics Agency(BMKG) office. ***3***
