W JAVA EARTHQUAKE HAS TAKEN AT LEAST 45 LIVES
Bandung, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - The death toll from the powerful earthquake that hit West Java at around 3 p.m on Wednesday has reached at least 45 while hundreds of homes and buildings have been destroyed, a disaster mitigation official said.
"The death toll keeps increasing. According to the latest data, 45 people have died," fahmi Azhar, an officer at the West Java Disaster Management Agency , said here on Thursday.
The fatalities happened in the following numbers and parts of West Java : five in Tasikmalaya district , four in Tasikmalaya city , eight in Bandung district , one in West Bandung city , nine in Garut , four in Ciamis , two in Bogor , and one in Sukabumi.
Fahmi said the temblor also caused landslides in Pamoyanan and Cikangkareng villages in Cianjur district, West Java. Efforts were also still underway to find victims buried under collapsed houses.
"We have preliminary reports on more deaths but we still need further confirmation ," Fahmi said.
Soon after the quake, disaster management coordination boards (Satkorlak PBs) in districts and cities in West Java were alerted. Officials from Disaster Management Board and Indonesian Red Cross have set up 32 tents and several emergency kitchen near evacuation camps.
Meanwhile, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and Vice Governor Dede Yusuf along with other officials were scheduled to visit the damaged areas on Thursday.
Social Affairs Minister Bachtiar Chamsah was also scheduled to visit several damaged areas in West Java including Tasikmalaya district.
A magnitude-7.3 earthquake on Wednesday (Sept 2) at 2.55 p.m caused significant damage in 10 districts in West Java.
However, the local authorities have yet to announce the material losses officially.
"We are still focusing on the evacuation of victims and on providing shelters for refugees," West Java Vice Governor Dede Yusuf said.
