PRESIDENT VISITS QUAKE-STRICKEN PARTS OF CIANJUR
Cianjur, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited quake victims in Cianjur, West Java, on Thursday.
He traveled by car for around five hours from his residence in Cikeas, Bogor, to Babakan Caringin in Cingkangkareng village, Cibinong, Cianjur, which had been hit hard by the quake on Wednesday.
President Yudhoyono and his wife Mrs Yudhoyono arrived at the location at 3.30pm after passing through a damaged village road.
The president and West Java Vice Governor Dede Yusuf and Cianjur military chief Lt Col Sunoto discussed the situation after the quake.
President Yudhoyono asked for the immediate implementation of emergency response to save survivors.
"What is important is the emergency response to save lives and to bury those who have died," he said.
The head of state also asked all local leaders to personally inspect conditions in their respective regions to assure quick handling of the problems and distribution of relief aid.
He said the government would extend Rp5 billion for emergency response efforts in West Java.
President Yudhoyono later visited Babakan village which was covered by a landslide triggered by the quake.
On foot President Yudhoyono toured the village and spoke comforting words to the people crowding around him.
The head of state was also accompanied by several cabinet ministers during the inspection.
Until Thursday 15 people had been found dead in the village while three others were in critical condition, 42 others were still missing. Eleven houses were buried by the landslide.
The epicenter of the magnitude 7.3 quake on Wednesday was in the ocean 142 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya in West Java. The quake affected many nearby coastal regions.
According to the National Agency for Disaster Control (BNPB) the death toll from the quake until 3pm on Thursday had risen to 57.
