PRESIDENT : NO FOREIGN ASSISTANCE NEEDED YET OVER QUAKE
Cianjur, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Thursday Indonesia did not as yet need international assistance to deal with the impact of Wednesday's quake.
"Until now the Indonesian government is still able to handle it by itself using existing national resources ," he said after visiting Babakan Caringin hamlet in Cianjur, West Java.
The hamlet with a population of 15 families or 57 people had been buried by a landslide following the quake.
The President said the handling of the impact of the quake had been coordinated at a central level since the disaster occurred and carried out by local administrations.
After seeing the situation in the field President Yudhoyono had asked for quick emergency response efforts to find possible survivors, treat the wounded or bury those killed and serve the evacuees.
He said the government would immediately extend Rp5 billion for emergency response efforts apart from other aids to be given by the central and West Java regional administrations.
He said the government would also help those whose houses had been damaged.
West Java deputy governor Dede Yusuf on the occasion reported that 54 people had been killed in the disaster in West Java while 147 others had been wounded and 10,000 people had been displaced.
He said 34 houses had been totally destroyed while 11,000 others heavily and 15,000 lightly damaged.
President Yudhoyono and First Lady Mrs Ani Yudhoyono broke the fast in the middle of the village road in the midst of gloomy weather with a little shower.
It took five hours to reach the hamlet by a stony village road from Cianjur. The president even had to walk to be able to reach Babakan Caringin.
Several cabinet ministers and also vice president-elect Boediono were seen in his retinue. Would-be members of the Regional Representatives Council were also seen in the delegation. Vice President Jusuf Kalla was not in the party.
