*** CHRONOLOGICAL REVIEW

SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments related to North Korea between Aug. 27-Sept. 2, 2009.

August
27 Yang Hyong-sop, vice president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's
Assembly (SPA), holds talks with a delegation of the International Liaison
Committee for Reunification and Peace in Korea, led by honorary Chairman Robert
Charvin at Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.
27 Kim Yong-nam, president of the SPA Presidium, sends a message of greetings to
Moldova's President Vladimir Woronin on its national day.
27 Chang Ung, president of the International Taekwondo Federation and chairman of
the International Martial Arts Games Committee, flies into Pyongyang to
participate in celebrations commemorating the 10th anniversary of the committee.
27 A reception is given in Pyongyang to mark "ASEAN Day," attended by Kim
Yong-il, vice minister of North Korean Foreign Affairs, diplomatic envoys from
Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, as well as embassy officials in
Pyongyang.
27-31 The 23rd Pyongyang International Invitational Table Tennis Tournament is
held in Pyongyang.
28 The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Kim Jong-il provided field
guidance to the Wonsan Saltern.
28 Inter-Korean Red Cross talks that opened on Aug. 26 at Mt. Kumgang come to an
end. The two sides agreed to hold a fresh round of reunions for separated
families on Sept. 26-Oct. 1 at Mt. Kumgang shortly before the traditional Korean
holiday of Chuseok.
28 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a message of greetings to his Cuban
counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla to mark the 49th anniversary of the
establishment of diplomatic ties between North Korea and Cuba.
29 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il provided field guidance to Munchon Secondary School
in Munchon, Kangwon Province.
29 Four South Korean fishermen return home aboard their fishing vessel after
being released by North Korea, which held the crewmen for 31 days. The boat,
named the Yeonan-ho, was towed to a North Korean port on the east coast after it
strayed into North Korean waters in the East Sea on July 30.
30 Cabinet Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Datuk Seri Mohamad
Najib Bin Tun Haji Abudul Razak, prime minister of Malaysia, on the country's
52nd national day.
30 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to the king of Malaysia on its 52nd
national day.
30 Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of Pak Min-su, former vice department
director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party, expressing deep
condolences over his death.
31 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to George Maxwell Richard, president
of Trinidad and Tobago, to mark the 47th anniversary of the country's
independence.
31 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Moammer el Gaddafi, leader of the
Libyan revolution, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Great September First
Revolution, a major holiday in the country.
31 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Kurmanbek Bakiyev, president of
the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, on the country's national day.
31 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Al Baghdadi Ali Al
Mahmoudi, secretary of the General People's Committee of Libya, to mark the
national day of the country.
31 The executive committee of the International Martial Arts Games Committee
(IMAGC) is held in Pyongyang, attended by Chang Ung, president of the
International Taekwon-Do Federation and chairman of the International Martial
Arts Games Committee, and Leong Wai Meng, vice-president of the federation and
secretary general of the committee.
31 A delegation of the All-China Journalists Association, led by Fang Songxian,
managing director of Radio Shanghai, and a delegation of the World Affairs Press
of China, led by its President Gao Shumao, fly into Pyongyang.
31 A meeting with Vietnamese embassy officials in Pyongyang is held at the DPRK
(North Korea)-Vietnam Friendship Pyongyang Textile Mill on the national day of
Vietnam.
31 The KCNA says a national youth exhibition of scientific and technological
achievements to mark Youth Day was held in Pyongyang from Aug. 24 to 31.
31 Rahimi Bin Harun, Malaysian ambassador to North Korea, hosts a reception at
the Taedong River Diplomatic Corps Club on its national day.

September
1 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Islam Karimov, president of the
Republic of Uzbekistan, on the country's national day.
1 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to Ivan Gasparovic, president of the
Slovak Republic, on the country's Constitution Day.
1 Kim Yong-nam sends a message of greetings to the Vietnamese President Nguyen
Minh Triet on the country's 64th founding anniversary.
1 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Nguyen Tan Dung, prime
minister of Vietnam, to mark the country's founding anniversary.
1 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Slovak Prime Minister
Robert Fico to mark the country's Constitution Day.
1 A North Korean foreign ministry delegation, led by its Vice Minister Kim
Yong-il, leaves for China.
1 Russia's "Orchestra of the 21st Century," led by Pavel Borisovich Ovsyannikov,
arrives in Pyongyang.
1 Kim Jong-il sends a wreath to the bier of Kang Sun-hui, alternate member of the
Central Committee of the Workers' Party and vice curator of the Central Light

1 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il inspected the command of KPA Large Combined Unit 264
and attended an art performance given by the State Merited Chorus.
2 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il provided field guidance to workers in Kyongsong and
Myongchon Counties in North Hamgyong Province.
2 The 4th National Martial Arts Championship for September 10 Prize opens with
due ceremony in Pyongyang.
2 Le Van Cu, Vietnamese ambassador to North Korea, hosts a reception at the
Taedong River Diplomatic Corps Club in Pyongyang on the national day of Vietnam,
attended by Pak Ui-chun, minister of foreign affairs.
2 The two Koreas normalize military communications lines in the west sea area.
