Top acts come to Seoul from theaters around the world By Shin Hae-in
SEOUL, Sept. 4 (Yonhap) -- An international theater festival organized by South Korea kicked off on Friday, drawing performers and producers of modern and classic plays from 10 different countries.
The World Festival of National Theaters, which runs through Nov. 4 at four major
theaters in Seoul, will feature 26 performances from France, Brazil, Taiwan and
Italy, among other nations. South Korea will present 12 works.
The annual event, organized by the state-run National Theater of Korea, opens
with a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" by Hong Kong director
Tsui Hark.
"The power of performers on stage was overwhelming. I put my focus on linking the
past and present together and showing human virtue amid mixed desires and
disputes," the director said during a press conference in Seoul Thursday.
"The Tempest" is the first stage performance to be directed by Tsui.
Considered a highly influential new wave film director, Tsui created "The Lovers
(1994)," "Seven Swords (2005)" and "The Warrior (2006)." He added during the
conference he has a "special affection" for Korean cinema.
Official invitations of the festival include "La Cagnotte" from France,
"Holeulone" by Belgian dance group Dame de Pic led by Karine Ponties, "Esmeralda"
by Russia's Kremlin Ballet Theatre as well as Korea's adaptation of "The Red
Cliff" and "The Three Sisters."
The National Theater of Korea, the first of its kind in Asia when it was
established in 1950, has been staging a wide variety of affordable performing
arts pieces to the public for over half a century.
It hosted the first World Festival in 2007, aiming to foster cultural exchanges
between national theaters worldwide and enhance global recognition of local
performances.
The National Drama Company of Korea, National Dance Company of Korea, National
Changgeuk Company of Korea and the National Orchestra of Korea -- all affiliated
with the National Theater -- will stage representative acts during the festival.
The event provides English subtitles for all performances.
