EIGHT AREAS IN E JAVA PRONE TO TSUNAMIS

Surabaya, Indonesia, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - At least eight regions in East Java province had been declared prone to tsunamis.

Head of the Disaster Eradication Agency (BPBD) of East Java province Haryogi said here Thursday the eight areas are Pacitan, Trenggalek, Tulungagung, Blitar, Malang, Lumajang, Jember, and Banyuwangi.

"These areas are all located in East Java's coastal regions," he said.

And when the 7.3 magnitude quake struck the southern parts of Tasikmalaya, West Java on Sept 2, even some residents in East Java's southern parts also felt the rattles.

"Therefore we are constantly increasing our coordination with the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency in Tretes,East Java," he said.

However, he said, an earthquake is difficult to predict, because normally it struck so suddenly. "We can only warn the people living the southern coastal areas of East Java to move to higher grounds if the sea suddenly receded," he said.

In anticipation of the disasters, the relevant authorities in East Java received a budget allocation of only Rp25 billion, while actually Rp 100 billion was needed, Haryogi said.***
