DISASTER HANDLING RUNNING WELL: PRESIDENT
Jakarta, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the emergency response carried out with regard to the earthquake in West Java's districts of Cianjur, Garut and Tasikmalaya has been running well.
The president who spoke at a fast-breaking dinner with the Democrat Party cadres at his Cikeas (Bogor, West Java) residence on Saturday said that all sides had carried out their respective tasks well and would continue to work maximally.
"Our system has functioned well, the regional governments which are in the front lines have also worked well. Instead of this however, the central government will continue to provide assistance," the head of state said.
He said that the handling of the earthquake which took place on Wednesday was not easy because of various constraints but it could be handled well as all parties played their respective roles.
The president himself visited one of the earthquake sites in Cianjur on Thursday where at least 14 houses were buried by landslides.
"The field was very difficult. I departed at 9.30 am and arrived in the location in the afternoon and in the Cipanas Palace at 9 pm. I learned a lesson after seeing the conditions in the region. Thus, There will be many tasks to accomplish ahead and infrastructures must continue to be built," he said.
He said that the government would continue to make various efforts to evacuate the victims and rehabilitate those who were affected by the quake.
"I told them that we will work as hard as we can and we would see later whether we could save (them). Religion teaches us to resign to God when we arrived at our logic and mind that something is already impossible," the president said.
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked West Java on Wednesday, killing at least 70 people. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake whose epicenter located at 8.24 degrees southern latitude, and 107.32 degrees eastern longitude near Tasikmalaya in West Java was also felt as far away as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and the resort island of Bali.***
