NEXT MINISTERS SHOULD NOT NECESSARILY BE PROFESSIONALS: GOLKAR CADRE

Jakarta, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - House member-elect Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono should not be sticked to the choice that next cabinet members should come from professionals because the posts for the ministers were political posts.

"It should not be forgotten that a minister occupies a political position. So, Yudhoyono should not only consider the professionalism aspect of a would-be minister," Soesatyo said here on Sunday
He made the remarks in response to the many calls from the public that President Yudhoyono should appoint ministers from the professional circles for his next cabinet.

Soesatyo said that the important thing was that each minister should be able to formulate, make and take a decision, or a policy which contained political interest.

"The qualification of such a minister is badly needed if we look at the present problem that is being faced by the Indonesian people," he said.

He said that in the coming five years, the government needed to take a number of political measures to serve, protect and safeguard the people's interest.

"In taking a political decision, the government should include its political wisdom. Thus, in taking the decision (the president) should refer to the recommendations of his ministers," Soesatyo said.

He expressed his worry that if the ministers were appointed from professionals, they would consider mere profit and avoid potentials of losses.

A professional, he said, only think of how to gain a profit and avoid potentials of losses. He cited as a concrete example a decision on fuel oil subsidy or import duty borne by the government and on the small-holder's credit scheme (KUR). A decision of this kind is not a typical decision of a professional.

"The policy with regard to the direct cash assistance (BLT) or the fuel oil subsidy is a political decision. So, a professional would not want to agree with the BLT or the allocation of rice for the poor," he added. ***
