TNI'S NEW ARMAMENT PROCUREMENT TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN 2011
Jakarta, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - Minister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono stated that the procurement of military armament will be conducted as of 2011.
"All the contracts will be signed in 2011. The decision is also based on the President's message to the Minister of Defense that the focus of new cabinet of the 2009-2014 term is to eradicate poverty and develop the national infrastructure," he said here on Sunday.
Plans to develop Indonesia's defense ability, he said will be focused on the procurement of transportation means that can carry the armament including ships and airplanes while strategic weapons for combat such as submarines and jet-fighters will also be bought.
In order to counter the combat strength of other countries, he added, Indonesia will be more focused on equal technology of all arms, he said.
In 2010, the government has increased the budget for the defense sector to Rp 40.7 trillion. However, the money is still allocated to upgrade operational system of the existing armaments.
In 2011, he added, Indonesia planned to buy two other submarines for the Navy. The Ministry of Defense is still discussing this plan although it already has two prospective producers, South Korea and Russia.
The submarine procurement, he said, is on credit basis for the 2004-2009 period. Unfortunately, the limited National Budget for the defense sector has caused stagnation in implementing the program.
