Confirmation hearing for PM nominee set for Sept. 21-22

SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Yonhap) -- Ruling and opposition parties agreed Monday to hold a
parliamentary confirmation hearing for Chung Un-chan, the nominee for prime
minister, on Sept. 21-22, party officials said.
President Lee Myung-bak last week nominated Chung, former president of Seoul
National University, as his new prime minister in a reshuffle that also affected
six Cabinet ministers.
The agreement on a confirmation hearing schedule was reached during a meeting of
deputy floor leaders of the ruling Grand National Party and the main opposition
Democratic Party at the National Assembly.
The two parties also agreed to hold separate confirmation hearings for the six
minister nominees from Sept. 15-18, said the officials.
The nomination of the new prime minister will be approved by the consent of more
than half the lawmakers attending the parliamentary session, although legislative
approval is not needed for the appointment of Cabinet ministers.
