BENGKULU ROCKED BY 5.4 EARTHQUAKE

Bengkulu, Indonesia, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu province and surrounding regions at 1:46 on Monday afternoon.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.51 southern latitude and 101.78 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 25 kilometers below sea level, or about 261 kilometers southwest of Bintuhan in Kaur district, 280 kilometers southwest of Krui in West Lampung, 303 kilometers southwest of Liwa in Lampung, and 307 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu.

Monday's earthquake in Bengkulu occurred less than a week after a powerful tectonic one measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked the districts of Tasikmalaya, Garut, Cianjur, and Bandung in West Java on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.

The earthquake rocked West Java at 2.55 pm local time, causing people in places as far Jakarta, Brebes and Semarang (Central Java) to rush out of their houses and office buildings in panic.

The earthquake killed over 70 people and injured hundreds of others.

Two aftershocks respectively measuring 5.1 and 5.4 on the Richter Scale rocked West Java later in the afternoon on the same day.

In Garut alone, at least 2,925 houses were destroyed, 6,864 seriously damaged, 3,702 moderately damaged, and 14,100 slightly damaged, Elka Nurhakimah, head of the Garut manpower and transmigration office, said recently.

The earthquake also seriously damaged 179 mosques, moderately damaged 59 others, and lightly damaged 136 mosques, she said. Some 257 elementary, junior and senior high schools with a total of 689 class rooms, were also damaged by the temblor.

The quake also ruined Islamic boarding schools, government offices, community health centers, Garut's Dr Slamet General Hospital, the local legislative council building, and private offices.

Meanwhile, head of head of West Java regional development board (Bapeda) spokesman, Deni Juanda, said in Bandung on Monday Wednesday's earthquake had inflicted material losses of more than Rp1 trillion on the province.

"The provisional material losses total not less than Rp1 trillion but there is a possibility the amount will increase," Deni Juanda said.

He said the material losses were based on material and non-material damage caused by the earthquake, which affected houses, offices, schools, mosques, public facilities and infrastructures. The worst-hit districts were Tasikmalaya and Bandung.
