DEKRANAS PRESENTS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO QUAKE VICTIMS

Tasikmalaya, Indonesia, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - National Handicraft Council (Dekranas) chairperson Mufidah Kalla, the wife of Vice President Jusuf Kalla, handed financial assistance of Rp650 million to Tasikmalaya quake victims on Monday.

Mrs Kalla handed the assistance to the victims of last Wednesday's earthquake at Suka Setia village in Cisayong sub district through Tasikmalaya deputy district head Endang Hidayat.

"We have a great concern for the victims of such a disaster and here we have Rp650 million in check to help reduce their burden of misery," Mrs Kalla said.

Besides financial assistance, the Dekranas also provided the quake victims at Suka Setia village with 3,100 sarongs, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 pairs of sandals, in addition to daily necessities such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, bathing soap, shampoo, masks, and other items.

During the visit to present humanitarian assistance to the quake victims, Mufidah Kalla was accompanied by Dekranas officials among others Effi Hardiyanto, Kartini Fahmi Idris, Ratna Megawangi Sofyan Djalil and a number of vice presidential staffers.

Mrs Kalla and her entourage left Halim Perdanakusuma airport in Jakarta at 8 on Monday morning and arrived at Tasikmalaya's Wiriandinata airport one hour later.

According to an officer of Suka Setia village, Suwanda, 1,091 houses in the village were damaged, forcing around 3,061 people to seek temporary shelter elsewhere.

Suwanda said the damage suffered by the 1,091 houses differed in degree : 427 were heavily and 651 others lightly damaged.

The magnitude-7.3 earthquake which had the potential to cause tsunami, rocked Cianjur, Garut, Tasikmalaya in West Java last Wednesday, killing at least 70 people and leaving hundreds of others homeless.

With its epicenter located at 8.24 degrees southern latitude, and 107.32 degrees eastern longitude near Tasikmalaya in West Java, the quake was also felt as far away as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and the resort island of Bali. ***
