THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN NEED ANTI-QUAKE TRAUMA TREATMENT : NGO
Bandung, Indonesia, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - Thousands of children of families affected by the recent west Java earthquake in Bandung distirct urgently need psychological help, a non-governmental organization (NGO) spokesperson said.
"Based on the results of our field observations in Bandung district's 26 subdistricts, we have concluded that children of earthquake-affected families really need psychological assistance," said Indonesian World Vision coordinator Susana Srini here on Monday.
She said the thousands of children in Bandung district who experienced last Wednesday's magnitude-7.3 earthquake centered near Tasikmalaya were still traumatized by the happening and needed psychological treatment to heal their condition.
"Most of the children told us that they were afraid to go back to their houses. It is a sign they are still traumatized and need to go through a healing process," Susana said.
Therefore, she added, child psychologists were really needed at the moment to give the children anti-trauma treatment.
To contribute to efforts to restore Bandung district children's pyschological health, Indonesian World Vision had built a "Children's Best Friend House" in Legok Kondang village in Bandung district in cooperation with the social affairs ministry, Susana said.
In the Children's Best Friend House, children of earthquake-affected families were involved in various activities to help them overcome their trauma,
Indonesian World Vision would also set up the same facility in three other villages - Mulya, Marga Mukti and Sukamanah - where many quake-affected families live.
Meanwhile, Yanda (8) an earthquake victim child in Legok Kondang village, said he was happy to play and learn in the Children's Best Friend house.
"I like it here because they have lots of story books and every body is kind to me," said the elemntary school third grader.
