PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO CALLS ON ULEMAS TO REMAIN CREATIVE
Bogor, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on Moslem intellectuals and scholars here on Monday to remain innovative and creative in dealing with various challenges facing the country.
It was time now for Moslems in the country to advance and contribute to civilization, he said in a speech at the commemoration of the descent of the Koran at the backyard of the presidential palace in Bogor, West Java.
"As a nation with the largest Moslem population in the world that inherits western and eastern civilizations it is appropriate for Moslems in Indonesia to advance," he said.
As a religion that carries blessings for the entire universe, the head of state said, Islam must focus on science and development of moral values.
In view of that he said Moslems must contribute to world civilization by way of approaches which are based on love and harmony.
Islam, he said, must be able to accept differences with a broad mind because it teaches tolerance.
"We must not dispute differences in moral values. We must be tolerant in spite of differences," he said.
With their high intellectual capacity and social piety he believed Indonesia would be able to become a big nation to build a civilized, advanced and welfare community.
The commemoration event was also attended by vice president Jusuf Kalla, several foreign ambassadors and also some cabinet ministers.
Two large tents were set up on the grass field in the backyard of the palace one for state officials and invitees and the other for the SBY Dzikir Council group.
The commemoration bore the theme "With the Spirit of the Descent of the Koran We Build the Capacity of Indonesian Human Resources to acquire Science and Technology for Increasing National Competitiveness."
