INDONESIA TO SEND 450 NURSES TO JAPAN

Kebumen, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will send 450 people to work as nurses or caregivers in Japan, the head of the National Agency for Manpower Protection and Placement (BNP2TKI), Jumhur Hidayat said here on Monday.

He said BNP2TKI sent 208 nurses to that country last year to work in hospitals (106) and care centers for the aged.

The sending of the workers in the formal sectors was based a cooperation program between the Indonesian and Japanese governments started in mid-2008, he said.

These workers received an intensive training course on Japanese language for six months and underwent a national test before working, he said.

"Thank God all of them passed the national examination which was held by the Japanese government so that they had all worked for a contract of three years," he said.

He said the workers who worked as caregivers recieved Rp17 million to Rp19 million a month while those working as nurses in hospitals Rp20 million to Rp22 million a month.

The wage is exclusive of lodging and food compensations the workers recieve during training and working based on the contract, he said.

Jumhur said the nurse employment program was implemented by BNP2TKI for Indonesia.

The cooperation agreement was signed in Jakarta in 2007 for the employment of 1000 nurses and caregivers in the first stage or in two years.

Based on that BNP2TKI still had yet to send 792 more workers to Japan until 2010.

"So, if 450 workers are sent to Japan by the end of this year, BNP2TKI still has yet to send another 342 next year," he said.
