Unionized rail workers launch strike
DAEJEON, Sept. 8 (Yonhap) -- Thousands of unionized rail workers went on a partial strike Tuesday to protest what they claimed was their company's refusal to negotiate wage hikes.
Nearly half of about 5,000 locomotive drivers at the union of Korea Railroad,
South Korea's railway business monopoly, launched the 24-hour walkout at
midnight, potentially inconveniencing commuters nationwide.
But no transportation chaos was expected as a number of workers stayed on duty
despite the strike, which appears to threaten bigger collective action if the
management does not budge.
"We will make utmost efforts to minimize passengers' inconvenience," the firm
said, advising people to head to their offices earlier than usual to avoid a
traffic jam.
The union urged the management to resume stalled negotiations on wages, adding it
will hold a rally later in the day in front of the Daejeon Station, located some
160km south of Seoul.
