TNI STRENGTHENING FREEPORT SECURITY
Timika, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - Around 600 National Defense Forces (TNI) soldiers have arrived in Timika, Papua, to strengthen the security around PT Freeport Indonesia.
Papua police spokesman Senior Commissioner Agus Rianto said here on Tuesday that the TNI troopers were sent from Cendrawasi miitary command to join the local police task force with 1,320 personnel to ensure security around Freeport area in the next three months.
"The TNI personnel will help Timika police maintain the outer ring security and the management will be adjusted to their task," Agus said on Tuesday.
Although the security condition around Freeport area has been rather conducive, Agus said the security personnel would continue to step it their alertness to anticipate recurrences of terror acts by gunmen who had yet to be identified.
"With the military assistance we will continue to step up security measures and make every effort to uncover previous terror cases," Agus said, adding that transportation from Timika to Tembagapura was limited with security extra tightened.
He also called on traditional gold panners along Kali Kabur river bank to stop their activity until security returned to normal.
Agus said thousands of traditional gold prospectors from outside Papua such as Maluku, Timor, Bugis, Buton, and Bima are at present doing their activity from Mile-40 until the lowland near Timika town.
The Papua police spokesman added that Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie was scheduled to arrive in Timika on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the security situation around Freeport area.
He said Aburizal would hold a meeting with the TNI and Papua Police top officials, Timika task force officials and Mimika district officials to discuss the security situation.
In July this year an Australian serving the Indonesian subsidiary of the US-based mining giant Freeport was shot dead by unknown attackers in Timika.
The Australian, identified as Drew Grant, was a mining technician shot in the neck as he was traveling in a car with five friends on a road between Tembagapura and Timika.
