ACEH JOLTED BY 5.3 EARTHQUAKE
Banda Aceh, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh province at 10:39 on Tuesday morning but there was no immediate report of casualties and material damage.
Mata Ie Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) spokesman Syahnan said the epicenter of the temblor was located at 5.34 degrees northern latitude and 93.14 eastern longitude at a depth of 132 kilometers or 243 kilometers southeast of Banda Aceh.
BMG said Tuesday morning's earthquake in Aceh was the first this month after the province was rocked several times last month at the intensity of up to 5 on the Richter scale in average.
With more than 17,000 islands scattering along a belt of volcanic and seismic activity known ans the Pacific "Ring of Fire", Indonesian archipelago is one of the most quake-prone places on the planet.
On Monday at 11:12 p.m. a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Java, or centered 263 kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta at a depth of 35 km in the Indian Ocean.
The temblor in Yogyakarta registered at III-IV on the Mercalli intensity scale but there was no reports of serious damage or panic among the residents.
Earlier at 1:46 Monday afternoon another earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu province and surrounding regions.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.51 southern latitude and 101.78 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 25 kilometers below sea level, or about 261 kilometers southwest of Bintuhan in Kaur district, 280 kilometers southwest of Krui in West Lampung, 303 kilometers southwest of Liwa in Lampung, and 307 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu.
Monday's earthquake in Bengkulu occurred less than a week after a powerful tectonic one measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked the districts of Tasikmalaya, Garut, Cianjur, and Bandung in West Java on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.
The earthquake rocked West Java at 2.55 pm local time, causing people in places as far Jakarta, Brebes and Semarang (Central Java) to rush out of their houses and office buildings in panic.
The earthquake killed over 70 people and injured hundreds of others.
Two aftershocks respectively measuring 5.1 and 5.4 on the Richter Scale rocked West Java later in the afternoon on the same day.
