FOUR MINISTERS OFFICIALLY RESIGN
Bogor, W Java, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - Four ministers have officially tendered their resignation to occupy new posts as members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2009-2014 period, a minister said.
"I have received letters of resignation from all the four ministers and have orally reported the matter to President Yudhoyono," Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa said after a function to mark President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's birthday at his Cikeas residence in Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday.
The four are Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik, Administrative Reforms Minister Taufik Effendy, Accelerated Development of Disadvanntaged Regions Minister Lukman Edy, and Cooperatives, Small- and Medium-scale Enterprises Minister Suryadharma Ali.
They were elected as DPR members in the April 2009 legislative election and will be sworn in on October 1, 2009. Meanwhile, the term of office of the current cabinet will end on October 20, 2009.
Under the law, they are banned from assuming dual posts.
Hatta said President Yudhoyono had given the green light to the four ministers to decide whether they would serve out their term of office as ministers or become legislators.
He said interim ministers would soon be appointed to replace the four ministers until a new cabinet was formed.
Two other ministers were also elected as DPR members in the April 2009 legislative election. They are youth and Sports Minister Adhyaksa Dault and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi.
Both Adhyaksa and Numberi have decided to serve out their term of office as ministers until October 20, 2009.
Political observer Arbi Sanit said the four cabinet ministers who had decided to resign in favor of a seat in the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2009-2014 period had taken correct and positive steps.
"Their decision to resign from their position as ministers is a right step and it means they respect the people who elected them," Arbi Sanit said here on Wednesday.***1***
