SEVENTEEN VIETNAMESE FISHERMEN ON TRIAL IN PANGKALPINANG
Pangkalpinang, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - The district court of Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung province, is trying 17 Vietnamese fishermen who were caught fishing illegally in Indonesian waters off the Sumatra coast.
Public prosecutor Olopan Nangolan said here on Wednesday the Vietnamese fishermen were charged with violating the law on immigration and fishing without the required documents.
"They could be jailed for a maximum of six years because they did not possess documents for fishing in Indonesian waters," he said.
The fishermen were caught by Indonesian marine police at around 8am on June 15 in the Karimata Strait in Bangka waters, he said.
Based on their confession, he said, they left Vietnam at around 6am on June 10 aboard CM 95890 TS boat for Karimata Strait in the Indonesian province of Bangka Belitung to fish sea cucumbers and arrived at around 8am.
As they were about to begin their activity an Indonesian marine police boat, KP Maleo 618, which was on patrol arrived at the location and caught them after finding they had no documents.
The fishermen looked helpless upon hearing the charges. Chief judge Hendro Suseno adjourned the session until next week.
The 17 fishermen are known as Tu Cong Ki, Nguyen Truc Tiep, Nguyen Cuong, Cong Duc An, Nguyen Trong Tai, Cong Duc Thanh, Nguyen Minh Hiep, Mai Xuan Hanh, Mai Xuan Quang, Mai Duc Tin, Nguyen Van Sang, Mai Ba Lai, Le Ngoc Lam, Nguyen Van Ghi, Nguyen Van Hung, Vo Quang Thuan and Huynh Van Triet.***4***
