N. Korea may have intentionally discharged water from dam: official
SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) -- North Korea may have intentionally discharged water from its dam that caused the death of six South Koreans, a senior government official said Wednesday.
Unification Minister Hyun In-taek told lawmakers, without going into details,
that Seoul believed the North had intentionally discharged some 40 million tons
of water from its Hwanggang Dam north of the demilitarized zone on Sunday.
The remarks made at the session of the National Assembly's Unification, Foreign
Affairs and Trade Committee marks the first time that a high ranking official
claimed that the release of water down the Imjin River was intentional. South
Korea had previously said it was looking into all possibilities that may have
caused the North to release so much water without prior warning.
Local authorities, meanwhile, said they have found the remains of a person who
was swept away by the rising river. The discovery is expected to end an extensive
search conducted during the past few days for the six people. The other five
bodies were all found by rescue workers.
