WORLD PEACE GONG MADE BY CENTRAL JAVA ARTIST
Ambon, Indonesia, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - The world peace gong, expected to be struck by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on November 10, 2009 in Ambon, was made by an artist from Central Java.
World Peace Day organizing committee chairman Cak Saimima said here on Thursday an artist from Central Java had been assigned to make the gong which was expected to be ready in the near future.
"We have made a coordination with Central Java provincial administration to support the making of the gong so it can be completed early October this year," Saimima said.
He said that after the peace gong is completed, it will be set up on its position at Victoria City Park near Merdeka square and Victoria Fort here.
"The peace gong is expected to motivate the people of Maluku to continue to maintain peace and order in the province and to shun the recurrence of deadly communal conflict which started to break out on January 19, 1999 and ended three years later," Saimima said.
Meanwhile, Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu positively welcomed Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie's initiative to appoint Ambon city as the venue of the World Peace Day in November this year.
"The trust given by the people's welfare minister to Ambon to host the World Peace Day indicates that the security situation in Maluku after the communal conflicts has been conducive for the such an international event," the governor said.
Therefore the Maluku provincial government has commissioned the building of a venue for a ceremonial gong to be inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on World Peace Day next November 10.
Anthonius Silaholo, head of the Maluku Public Works Office, said here early this week that the Victoria City Park had been selected from among a number of proposed locations as the spot where the peace gong would be set up.
"Several possible locations were considered for the venue but we finally chose Victoria Park because it is in the city," Sihaloho said.
He said Martaphons Park in Poka village, Baguala subdistrict, was also observed to be the site of the peace gong but it was located outside the city of Ambon so the final choice fell on Victoria Park.***
