WEST PAPUA ASKS VP TO MEDIATE IN PROBLEM SOLVING

Makassar, Indonesia, Sept 10 (ANTARA) - The West Papua Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) has asked Vice President Jusuf Kalla to facilitate and mediate in the solution of the Papua problem in a national dialog.

"We have asked Vice President Jusuf Kalla to facilitate and mediate in the solution of the Papua problem," West Papua Provincial Legislative Assembly speaker Jimmy Demianus Itji said before his meeting with Kalla at the latter's private residence on Haji Bau street here on Thursday.

Jimmy said a number of Papua figures had met with Kalla and asked the vice president to mediate in a national dialog between the central government and the Papua community to discuss the failure in the implementation of a special autonomy in the easternmost province.

The vice president, according to Jimmy, has so far been playing a major role in the solving the Papua problem because he had a lot of experience in solving various issues in conflict areas in the country.

However, Jimmy added that the national dialog would depend on Law No.21/2001 on special autonomy and Government Regulation PP 54/2004 on the Papua People's Council, in addition to eight or nine regulations on natural resources management, land management and protection, and local culture and tradition.

"Do not forget that the people of Papua have given their significant votes to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his running mate Boediono in the recent presidential election, and therefore the new government should make a breakthrough in solving the problem in Papua immediately," Jimmy said.

He added that if the new government was able to solve the problem of Papua, then there would be no need to hold a national dialog about the matter.

But if a national dialog is necessary, Jimmy said at least four components should take part namely the central government, the governments of Papua and West Papua, the people who ideologically support the Unitary State of Indonesian Republic (NKRI), and the people who opposed the government.

"If the dialog has to be conducted, we want it held in Malino, South Sulawesi," Jimmy said.***
