CHINESE BIZMEN DONATE RP500 MLN FOR W JAVA QUAKE VICTIMS
Jakarta, Sept. 10 (ANTARA) - Businessmen from Fujian and Shandong, China, have provided Rp500 million in aid for victims of the earthquake that hit West Java last September 2, 2009.
The aid was presented through the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), according to a press statement from PMI here on Thursday.
PMI Chairman Mar'ie Muhammad received the funds from the Chinese businessmen last Tuesday (Sept. 8), in the presence of 15 Indonesian businessmen representing their Fujian and Shandong partners.
Didi Dawis, on behalf of the Chinese businessmen, said the financial assistance was expected to help supply the temblor's victims with food and medicines.
In the next stage, more aid would be provided to build bamboo houses, sanitation and clean water facilities and a field hospital, he said.
Meanwhile, PMI has prepared 8,000 Eid Fitr packages to be distributed on September 16, 2009, to the victims.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic upheaval.
The Sept 2, 2009 earthquake affected 16 districts in West Java, leaving 73 people dead and more than 600 others injured.
In West Java, 54,171 houses were seriously damaged and 114,601 others were lightly damaged in the earthquake.***
